For Beginners
Calisthenics or the gym – which should you choose?
An honest answer from a coach who did both for 10 years.
There’s no single right answer – there’s a right answer FOR YOU. Here’s what I consider when advising my students in Venlo.
Choose calisthenics if:
you want to train outdoors, for free and without a membership,
you care about full body control and functional strength,
you have limited space at home or can’t stand crowded gyms,
you dream of mastering skills like the muscle-up, handstand or front lever.
Choose the gym if:
your main goal is maximum hypertrophy (pure muscle building),
you enjoy working with external weights and progressing in kilograms,
you have a good gym nearby and enjoy that atmosphere.
What my students choose
Here in Venlo, most people I coach choose calisthenics for three reasons: there’s no waiting for equipment, you can train in the park for free, and you see quick improvements in strength and coordination.
Remember: one doesn’t rule out the other. Many of my clients combine calisthenics with 1–2 gym sessions a week.
